MICHAEL NYMAN
(Composer) Born in London, award-winning composer Michael Nyman studied at the
Royal Academy of Music (1961-1965) and later at King's College, London. Throughout
the seventies, Nyman was a music critic, lecturer, composer, and performer.
Since 1977, Nyman has composed for his permanent performing ensemble The Michael Nyman
Band, created works for performance artists and for the Paris exhibition "La
Traversee de Paris," and written music scores for a wide range of international film
and television projects.
As a film composer, Nyman's soundtracks have included numerous collaborations with
noted British director Peter Greenaway, including Drowning by Numbers, The
Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover and Prospero's Books.
In 1993 Nyman received wide acclaim for his work on Jane Campion's Academy Award-winning
film The Piano, for which he established a repertoire of music not only for the
film but for its central character Ada. The Piano soundtrack was an
international bestseller.
Other notable film scores by Nyman include Brimstone and Treacle, Monsieur
Hire, Carrington, Gattaca, Ravenous, The End of
the Affair, and the upcoming Kingdom Come.
Mr. Nyman has been nominated three times for a Golden Globe (The Piano, Gattaca,
and The End of the Affair).
